As young men and women around China celebrated Mother’s Day together, families came together to explore Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) virtually from the comfort of their homes. The simulcast across Xinhuanet, Nanfang+, and Bilibili attracted over eight hundred thousand viewers across all platforms.
A significant focus was the University Leaders Q&A. SUSTech President Shiyi CHEN, Vice President Chun LU, Vice President Dongxiao ZHANG, University Council Vice Chairperson Fengliang LI, and Vice-Provost (Global Strategies) Chunmiao ZHENG all presented their portfolios of responsibility.
They also answered the majority of questions from prospective candidates and their parents, including the future vision for SUSTech across multiple aspects.
The other popular broadcast featured the heads of different departments. Department of Earth and Space Sciences head Xiaofei CHEN, Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering Dean Dapeng YU, College of Sciences Dean Xueming YANG, College of Engineering Dean Zhenghe XU and International Center for Mathematics head Jiping ZHANG all talked to parents and students about research developments and talent pipeline progress. They also discussed the cutting-edge technology being developed at SUSTech.
Due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, SUSTech could not hold its traditional open day. Two senior students took participants on a virtual tour around campus from teaching and research buildings, to dormitories to sporting facilities. They provided a unique perspective of the beautiful scenery across campus.
Several students, including Linying SHANG (’20, Chemistry), worked in contribution with several alumni, the parents of students, and faculty members to discuss the path to university. Many potential students and parents were concerned about the subject selection, so the Department of Computer Science and Engineering head Xin YAO and Department of Mathematics head Xiaoming WANG went into great detail about the different disciplines across campus.
Many departments and centers also contributed to the day’s events.
